The Pursuit 2
Character Profiles
The Setting | Arlington, Virginia
The choice for this location was purely random. It offers no particular significance to the story besides being a location I was somewhat familiar with. The only thought I put into it was that I needed the action to take place on the American East coast.
Let’s meet the main characters
Mateo Torres | Serial Killer | Co-Protagonist
Sharing the role of protagonist, Mateo Torres was a no-nonsense type of guy. He had been a serial killer for most of his adult life. He learned the skills from his father, who learned from his father. Killing came naturally to Mateo, as he grew up around constant violence and tutelage from his father. His modus operandi from a young age was to kill or be killed. What led Mateo to his life’s work as avenger was his father’s death.
Killed by a man in a territorial dispute when Mateo was sixteen. Authorities caught his killer, gave him to the legal system, which exonerated him in the most obvious sham trial ever. Mateo got an up close and personal look at just how corrupt the criminal justice system was. On a quest to avenge his father’s death, circumstances dragged him deeper and deeper into a world of underground operatives who all openly evaded legal accountability. He unwittingly discovered his life’s work as he hunted, caught up with, and doled out the punishment to his father’s killer. So enraged by the act, he severed the killer’s head and put it on display in his neighborhood as a warning to anyone thinking of revenge.
The gruesomeness of the act was a constant reminder to everyone interested, that attacking Mateo Torres was extremely ill-advised. Though Mateo cooled his aggression as he aged, his ruthlessness remained unchanged. Mateo shares the protagonist’s role with his partner, Harper Mane.
Harper Mane | Serial Killer | Co-Protagonist
After college, Harper embarked on a career in IT Infrastructure. Not that she was interested in the field. She wasn’t. But it was easy to get into, paid an insanely lucrative salary, and allowed her time to grow into the profession she truly loved; dealing with life’s low life’s. Harper’s preferred method of justice was a bullet to the back of the head.
Harper grew up among violence, at home and away. Her father was very abusive towards her and her mother. He was extremely volatile, and it took very little to set him off. At thirteen, she witnessed him kill a man one evening while supposedly going to a convenience store for a pack of smokes. Apparently, some guy looked at her mom a bit too long one day at the mall and she told her husband. That evening, he told Harper he needed to go to the store and that she should ride along. She witnessed him beat the guy to death in a remote section of the parking lot. It both traumatized and excited her. She was shocked when she told her mom and found out that’s how mom dealt with people she didn’t like. It didn’t matter whether they did anything to her. Her wife-beating knight in shining armor reacted exactly the same each time.
Soon after that incident, Harper developed a love for guns, specifically easily concealed handguns. Dad, of course, was thrilled and taught her everything he knew. She soaked it all up like a sponge and became extremely proficient. An ex-Marine, he also taught her hand-to-hand combat, and she became proficient at that as well. She killed her dad at age nineteen, while home from college one weekend. He laid his hands on her and her mom for the last time. Over the years, she had developed a real “thing” for hands. She attributed human hands as being responsible for literally all of man’s atrocities throughout history. As she began her foray into serial killing, her signature became cutting off and collecting her victims’ hands.
Rhonda Colegal | Waitress
Ms. Colegal had a minimal role towards the end of this series. However, she was very helpful to Harper while she was in Valdosta on assignment. She became an integral character of that time. Towards the end the of Harper’s assignment, out of nowhere, Rhonda asked a big freaking question that blew Harper’s socks off and, in doing so, raised many questions that I have yet to land on an answer for. Stay tuned to this character. You will see her again.
